The Friday Brief for August 21, 2026: Partners Sharpen Their Focus

Piramal Pharma buys a majority stake in Yapan Bio, and Emergent BioSolutions is restructuring.

Editor’s Take: Pharma partnerships are zeroing in on common areas of expertise to remedy unmet needs faster.

In “The Friday Brief,” let’s get right into it—a busy week with alliances forming and growing.

Piramal Pharma has increased its ownership stake in Yapan Bio by over 40%, a nearly $8 million cash consideration. This brings Piramal’s total ownership of Yapan’s equity to 74%, making Yapan a Piramal subsidiary.

Henlius and Sandoz are expanding their oncology biosimilars partnership on up to 10 products or components. These fall into the categories of either monoclonal antibodies or antibody-drug conjugates.

Charles River Labs and Medigen Vaccine Biologics are partnering on validating a virus seed bank for a next-gen enterovirus vaccine. Andelyn Biosciences linked up with Queen’s University, in Canada, to produce a gene therapy candidate for treatment of GM2 gangliosidoses. And AI remains an ever-present factor—Bristol Myers Squibb is working with AI company Chai Discovery on therapeutic antibody discovery.

Emergent BioSolutions is restructuring in response to Q2 results. The company may be eliminating up to 90 roles, but that and other moves could save $40 million dollars annually. Meanwhile, Sino Biopharmaceutical in China is launching a new global brand, SBP Group, transitioning from being a domestic biopharma company.

A couple construction updates to tell you about. Genentech had the topping out ceremony for its new manufacturing facility in Holly Springs, NC. In Ireland, SK pharmteco completed facility expansions boosting small-molecule API, HPAPI, and ADC payload manufacturing capacity.
